Smart is Something You Get!

Picture
Everyday the students recite this saying at the end of morning announcements.  This belief comes from the idea that people are not just born smart, it is something that is a result of effort, hard work, and perseverance.  Many students have their mind made up at an early age.  They believe they are either smart or not smart.  In both cases, this belief is a misconception.  Without the reinforcement of effort and the resilience to work through mistakes and challenges, growth cannot happen.

This initiative came from the book Mindset, by Carol Dweck.  In the book, Dr. Dweck encourages parents and teachers to promote the growth mindset in children.  She gives clear definitions and examples of both growth and fixed mindsets and give practical suggestions for fostering the growth mindset.

I believe all students can learn.  I work to create a safe learning environment where students feel safe enough to challenge themselves and take risks.  Learning is a process and I teach students to enjoy the process that gets them to a desired product.  I have found over my years of teaching that students are often too dependent on praise as a determining factor on if they are a "good" student.  To me a good student is the one that is motivated with the desire to learn and the willingness and stamina to stick with the challenges.  Learning is growing.  Every year my students bring me to a new level of growth as a teacher and a human being.  I can't wait to see where your children take me!

Extraordinary Instrument

This amazing creation is an excellent example of the interdependence of a system.  Can you identify the parts of the system?  How are these parts interdependent?  Will the music sound the same if something in system is changed or removed?
